    writing need help please

    Heather:

Write a response to the following prompt:

    • Provide a general description of COPPS, and describe how it differs in philosophy and practice from traditional, reactive policing.
    • What are the four steps in the S.A.R.A problem solving process, and how can it be used to help stop crime? Give a specific example of a crime, and its situation, that could benefit from this method.

COPPS- according to our text on page 82 is “represents a dramatic shift from the traditional methods of policing” (Peaks, Gains & Glensor, 2012).  What this means is that it is a proactive philosophy and is used for problem solving for criminal activity in the neighborhoods.  Which means that with criminal activity sends fear, and affects the quality of life.  This is where the community and police departments work together to solve problems that affects their neighborhood.

Traditional policing is a reactive approach and is natural.  Police would patrol their beats and would answers calls or give tickets for minor infractions.  The police would also, of course answer crimes that were in progress.  To prevent crimes the key would be more police presence in the trouble neighborhoods.  With traditional policing the interaction between the police and the community was negative.

    The SARA steps are:

Scanning- initial information gathering stage by the supervisors

Analysis- more in-depth information gathering stage, involving crime reports, the crime analysis unit, a news report, and zoning and health departments.

Response-involves a number of meetings, improved the lighting and landscaping, agreements.

Assessments- A follow-up look at the CFS (Calls for Service) in the area.

The specific crime that SARA would work is graffiti, which is vandalism. Here in Ashland we were getting hit with graffiti by one person for over 9 months.  The SARA worked, because we scanned the tags, analysis that the tags were being done over and over, responded by taking pictures and cleaning it up, the assessment would be that we put it in the City Source that comes with the electric bill each month.  We did not use the media, because we did not want to glorify the crime, but had wanted the citizens of Ashland help find him in which they did.
