    The Future of Community-Oriented Policing

Based on the textbook, compare two future concerns or issues regarding research, problems, or benefits with current situations in these areas. What factors will initiate these changes throughout the future? How will this affect or change community policing at the officer-level?

Based on the textbook, compare two future concerns or issues regarding research, problems, or benefits with current situations in these areas. What factors will initiate these changes throughout the future? How will this affect or change community policing at the officer-level?

The research future concerns are basically what information to we evaluate and what do we do with the information.  With the research portion, community policing is still in its infant stage and so the data is changing all the time and what happens now can change the future as well.  One of the main things that have been identified is how the leadership or management of the program is evaluated as well as the performance.  Collection of good data and consistent data will enable departments to evaluate the successes and opportunities and allow for change to correct or improve the service to the community.

The main problem for the future is the same one we have today and that is implementation of the community policing strategy.  With our country, each neighborhood is different and the make up is not the same either.  So it is hard to create a cookie cutter model that can be used in all departments.  It takes research and local influence to create the right process.  There must be a leader who is dedicated and a clear vision laid out to follow.  As we continue to implement community policing, similarities can be identified and we can learn from successes and failures.  It will just need to be handled by each department on a one on one basis  (Oliver, 2008).

The change at the officer level for community policing will be great in my opinion.  The stereotype police duties will be no more and you will need officers with special skills or certification to help implement community policing.  This could even be having different educational degrees or specialized certifications.  How to build community morale and how to deal with a impoverished community could be a couple of special skills needed for the future community oriented police officers.  As the officers become more integrated in the community, they will have to master special skills to help deal with the problems of their community.
