Classmate one: I read an article about the Influence of the Leader’s Creativity on the Employees’ Creativity, which reminds me of what I have learned in chapter 5. First of all, I want to talk about the main ideas in this article. In this article, the author holds that the demonstration effect of working partners, especially leaders, plays an important role in the innovative behavior of employess. The companies that are led by creative leaders are often full of vitality. Their employees are also very innovative. For example, the teachers of New Oriental have the similiar style with Yu Minhong. Their lecture style is unique and their teaching methods are diverse. So the innovative performance of the leadership in the work, to some extent, can bring about the improvement of employees’ creativity. This is not only related to leaders’ functions such as their leading style, but also related to the performance of the leaders themselves. According to our textbook, when a person observes and imitates another’s behavior, this learning process is called observational learning. By observing other people, we can acquire knowledge, skills, rules, strategies, belief, and attitudes.( Schunk, 2011). In fact, leaders play an important role in the innovative behavior of employess, which is also a kind of observational learning. This also inspires us that parents and teachers must give full play to their model role in education, because their behaviors have a tremendous effect on the development of children. So are the broadcast, media, and network . Therefore, people must set a good example for children which is conducive to their physical and mental development.

Classmate 2: Nowadays, everyone is looking for the best parenting techniques.  People write blogs, write books, and create videos describing their parenting technique and how they use punishment and reinforcement to teach their children good behaviors and hinder them from doing bad behaviors.  Operant conditioning, though not mentioned, is at the core of all the blogs and videos.

Chapter five describes operant conditioning as “a form of associative learning in which the consequences of a behavior change the probability of the behavior’s occurrence” (p. 178). Reinforcement and punishment work under the umbrella of operant conditioning.  There are two types of reinforcement and punishment, positive and negative.  Parenting a child can be hard and provides lots of opportunities and different options when teaching children, the differences between right and wrong.

Many people in their blogs and videos have many different views on punishment.  When I grew up we were spanked and told to put our nose in the corner.  Today, spanking is deemed to be archaic and inappropriate.   Blogs give alternatives to spanking as punishment. They often give advice on grounding as a source of negative punishment and how to not just yell at your child as a positive punishment.  Punishing a child is very hard to do and many parents avoid it.  There are numerous books helping guide parents in how to discipline and not become push overs.Additionally, there are lots of videos that give advice on how to use reinforcement with your children. With so much media on the topics, it is imperative to know what the types of punishment and reinforcement are and their impacts.

    1. Find an example of what you have learned in Chapter 6 in any form of media.

Classmate 1: Chapter six is all about memories and how we retrieve them.  As I was reading the chapter, all I could think about was how similar the content was to the Disney movie Inside Out.  Inside Out deals with how you emotionally react to certain circumstances: joy, sad, anger, disgust, fear.  The movie also focuses on memories.

The memory aspect of Inside Outis fascinating.  It discusses core memories, long term memories, short term memories, and forgotten memories.  The core memories make Riley who she is, and without them she forgets herself.  She needs her long-term memories to be her truest self and to have her islands of personality.  Without her long-term memories, she ceases to have a true personality.  Riley’s short-term memories are held in headquarters for the day, so riley has access to them.  The short-term memories leave at the end of the day to go to long term memory.  The workers in long term memory determine if the long-term memories are relevant or not.  They discard the irrelevant memories to the memory dump.  The forgotten and irrelevant memories are held in the memory dump.  After a period of time, the memories in the memory dump disappear.

In the movie, Joy and Sadness along with Riley’s core memories are vacuumed out of headquarters and into long-term memory.  They have to get Riley’s core memories back to headquarters and the movie is basically a journey to get back.  Along the way they relive some of Riley’s old memories.  All in all, the movie does a beautiful job on describing how memories are made and how they are stored.
