The main difference between a DNP and a PhD in nursing is that the DNP is practice-oriented, and the PhD in nursing is research-oriented (AACN, 2016). Where the DNP prepares a nurse to be an advanced practitioner and provide direct patient care, the PhD prepares a nurse to develop new nursing knowledge and further lines of scientific inquiry. Since there are so many BSN to DNP or PhD in nursing programs available, I’m definitely exploring that route as opposed to pursuing an MSN next. I think I’m more suited for the PhD because I have a much quieter personality, and the part I love most about my job now is teaching and researching. Overall, I’m so new to nursing that I’d like more experience before deciding between either one, because it seems the choice can close a lot of doors if you decided you’d rather go in the other direction. Also in one of the journal articles for this week, it seems that many nurses who start in a PhD program had switched to a DNP program for employability considerations (Loomis, Willard, & Cohen, 2007). I think the quality of education and employment opportunities can depend on which school you attend and the faculty for either the DNP or PhD, and prospective students should explore a program before they sign up for it.
