Primary Source Analysis, writing homework help

This paper is an exercise in analyzing primary sources. A primary source is a first-hand account created by the witnesses or first recorders of events at the time they occurred. This includes (but not limited to): letters, diaries, photographs, artifacts, legal documents, artistic creations, interviews, memoirs, and newspaper articles. These testimonials provide the evidence for understanding the time period, events, and historical actors under examination.

From the list, you will choose ONE of the groups of documents numbered below and analyze the source(s).

[If you choose #3 or #4, these are a series of several documents. You must read these as a whole and try to incorporate them into your historical analysis. All of the primary sources are available for download on Canvas.]

    1. Kwanggaett’o Stele [Peter H. Lee and Wm. Theodore de Bary eds., Sources of Korean Tradition, vol 1: From Early Times through the Sixteenth Century, 23-26. (“Kwanggaett’o Stele)
    2. Lee and de Bary eds. Sources of Korean Tradition, 1, 154-156 (“Ten Injunctions”)
    3. Yu Sŏngnyong, The Book of Corrections: Reflections of the National Crisis during the Japanese Invasion of Korea 1592-1598, 109-111, 151-152, 197-199, 224-28; Yi Sunsin, Imjin changch’o: Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s Memorial to Court, 199-203

In your essay, you must include your views on the following: (1) What aspects of the content strike as important in understanding the history of the period and why? (2) How might the document(s) improve our understanding of this period’s history? (3) What are the issues we need to be mindful of when using these materials? (For example: historical context, author, genre, purpose, censorship, circulation, etc.)

Your paper must be in short essay format, 2 pages, 12 point font, and double spaced.

    DUE: February 6, 2017

Your analysis must be your own analysis. If you reference another author’s analysis, you must attribute their work by citing the source. Incident of plagiarism will be dealt with following official university rules.

Citation Style for Primary Source Analysis Papers
If you quote or reference a source within your paper, you must cite the source using ChicagoAuthor-Date style as shown in the guideline below:

    “Kwanggaett’o Stele” or “Ten Injunctions”:
“Paekchan [Paekche] and Silla had long been our subject people and as such had brought tribute to our court” (Lee and de Bary 1997, 25).

    The Book of Corrections:
“The mobs attacked the state warehouses and plundered them” (Yu 2002, 109).

    Imjin changch’o:

“As an upright true gentleman he did not like to be a hanger on at the big houses ofnoblemen in power” (Yi 1981, 200).

    Nanjung ilgi:

“When I saw my mother, she was unaware of my arrival as if she were in deep sleep” (Yi1977, 62).

Since you will only be citing sources from in class material for the primary source and secondarysource analysis paper, no works cited page is necessary.
