Music question
FIRST:Watch the ABC News report on Beyonce lip-syncing the national anthem, read the Washington Post article on Beyonce admitting to lip-syncing, and watch the “Top 10 Lip-Sync Fails” video in the Topics in Music Today Instructional Materials.
In today’s pop music world it has become increasingly more common for artists to sing along to pre-recorded tracks or to simply lip-sync their “live” performances. While for some events where uncontrollable variables such as the weather MAY be a valid reason for doing so, there are many times where this seems to more be the case due to other issues such as performers trying to do to much (singing plus involved choreography) or simply lack of musical talent.
In some cases this maybe could be overlooked. In the case of the inauguration Beyonce admits to too little time to rehearse with the band as well as issues with the weather, she chose to sing with her backing track.Add to this that no one was PAYING to actually see her perform there, and this might be acceptable.
However, if you think about how much people have paid or are paying to attend concerts by the likes of Brittney Spears, 50 Cent, or Shakira, and you have to question if the money was well spent to basically watch artists sing along to their CD which you already own and could’ve listened to in the comfort of your own home.
The question I ask is what are your thoughts on lip-syncing during a “live” performance?Do you think it is acceptable in certain situations and not in others?Do you feel that it is a misrepresentation of the artist regardless of the event? This is obviously a very opinion based question, but be sure to justify your stance on the issue.
