    Multicultural Counseling Conceptualization Instructions

    This assignment requires you to develop a general framework for working with a specific population from the list provided in the table below. You will demonstrate an understanding of inter- and intra-group characteristics to promote the delivery of culturally sensitive counseling services.

    Choose a group from the following list, selecting a group different from your own.

    African Americans

    Asian Americans

    Caucasian Americans

    Latin Americans

    Native Americans

    Individuals with Disabilities

    Component #1: Inter-group Characteristics 

      1)  Student identifies the group selected from the list on the instructions sheet for this assignment and describes each of the following in relation to this group (support your statements with peer reviewed journal articles and/or text books):

    • Attitudes, beliefs, and values

    • Group self-perceptions and issues related to stereotyping

    • Customs, practices, behaviors

    • Spirituality/Religion

    • Opportunities and barriers in the U.S. and Internationally

    Key historical events and figures impacting the culture and societal perceptions of this group

    Component #2: Intra-group Characteristics

    1)  Based on the group student identified in component #1, student describes how the group might differ in relation to each aspect noted below:

    • Attitudes, beliefs, and values

    • Group self-perceptions

    • Customs, practices, behaviors

    • Spirituality/Religion

    • Societal perceptions

    Opportunities and barriers in the U.S. and Internationally

    Component #3: Culturally Sensitive Theories & Techniques

    1)  Student identifies three theoretical approaches that have been empirically validated as effective with the selected group (for any credit student must cite a peer reviewed journal supporting the use of the theory given).

    2) Student identifies three counseling techniques that have been empirically validated as effective with the selected group (for any credit student must cite a peer reviewed journal supporting the use of the technique given).

    3) Student describes how the inter- and intra-characteristics noted above relate to counseling with this group, including resilience building and eliminating obstacles and illuminating opportunities.

    Component #4: Ethical and Legal

    1)  Student thoroughly discusses the ethical and legal aspects that counselors need to consider when providing counseling services to this specific group including issues of conflict, bias, prejudice, oppression, and discrimination.

    2) Student shares reflections on the significance of multicultural sensitivity to his or her work as a professional school counselor.

    Component #5: Writing

    Student uses correct grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and spelling.

    Component #6: Scholarly Writing

    Student includes at least three peer-reviewed journal articles to support suppositions.

    Students please contact the writing center, publisher of the journal, or research the journal using the Internet to determine if your selected journal is peer-reviewed.
