disscusion on poem africa to america

Read Pgs. 31-37: Phillis Wheatley’s “On Being Brought from Africa to America”, “To the Right Honourable William, Earl of Dartmouth, His Majesty’s Principal Secretary of State of North-America, & c.”; Benjamin Banneker’s Letter to Thomas Jefferson.

After finishing this week’s readings on Phillis Wheatley and Benjamin Banneker, students should consider these questions to help prepare them for the quiz:

Who is Wheatley addressing in her poem, To the Honourable William Earl of Dartmouth? What exactly is Wheatley advocating for through her poetry? How does Wheatley use Christian imagery, tone (the attitude or perspective of the writer), mood (determines the subject of the work), similes, irony, metaphors and symbols to get across her points?

Who is Banneker talking to in his letter? What issues is Banneker addressing in his letter? Consider how the issues discussed in Banneker’s letter relates to the prison industrial complex today?
